Apple has released iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6, bringing bug fixes, security updates, and a behind-the-scenes change designed to prepare devices for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. The updates are available now from Settings > General > Software Update.
Apple says the release optimizes the Spotlight index in preparation for its next major operating-system update. Spotlight powers system-wide searches for apps, contacts, messages, files, and other content, so the indexing change should help make the transition to iOS 27 smoother.
This is primarily a maintenance release rather than a feature-packed update. Apple also includes unspecified bug fixes and security updates, making iOS 26.6 a recommended download even if users do not notice obvious interface changes after installing it.
How to update
To install iOS 26.6 or iPadOS 26.6, open Settings, tap General, and select Software Update. Backing up your device before installing any system update is always a good precaution.
