This is Otterbox’s second iPad case and the ultimate iPad cases at that. This baby offers the best possible protection for your iPad (at least from what we have seen so far!). The Otterbox Defender Series for iPad is massive and very rugged. It will definitely add some weight to your devices. If your the type of person who wants to sacrifice protection for style then you should check out the Otterbox Commuter Series Case for the iPad. Please read our review of the Commuter Case for iPad. In this review I will go over the contents & features of the Otterbox Defender Series for iPad, My likes and dislikes, and Our final rating.
If you have already read our review of the Commuter Series Case for the iPad, then you will notice that the package contents are very similar. They actually include some of the same things! The box, minus the writing describing what it is, the biodegradable packaging, and the paper folder with the included plastic screen protector, soft cloth, and squeegee.
So inside the box you have the case itself which is 3 pieces. You will then find a paper envelope that includes the easy to follow instructions, a clear protective piece of plastic for your screen, a soft cloth, and a squeegee. The first thing you are going to want to do is clean your iPad.
Take the included soft cloth and clean all of the finger prints and dust off the screen. You will then want to apply the plastic screen protector and then finally use the squeegee to remove any left over air bubbles. Once you have cleaned off your iPad and applied the screen cover, put on the hard layer of plastic and then wrap it up with the soft rubbery layer.
The Defender Case for iPad comes with a screen cover that doubles as a stand. This is perfect because you can have a stand whenever you need it and a cover to protect the glass when you are traveling.
The stand is very sturdy and will not fall over if you push on it too hard. One downfall for some may be that it is not adjustable but it is at a perfect angle for typing up an email or watching a movie in my opinion anyways. If you find yourself not making use of the stand, you will find it very handy that the outside silicon material is very easy to grip so it will not slide out of your hands easily.
Overall this case is very rugged. I find that I am able to toss(gently still) my iPad all around and not have to worry about it getting damaged or scratched. Since the screen is recessed from the case it will more than likely protect the glass from shattering if you drop it on the face. I did not want to test this just in case I did manage to shatter my iPad…
The only real issues that I have with this case are that the seems are not completely flush when you press the rubbery part of the case onto the hard plastic. The second issue I have is that there is a camera hole… What? This will be nice when Apple finally releases an iPad with a camera. As long as Apple keeps the camera in the expected position, Otterbox will not have to redesign a new case an you will be able to use a Defender case right away when the new iPad comes out. The camera hole however did confuse me a bit when I use the iPad in the dark. It feels like it is the home button so I sometimes try to push it and then quickly realize to switch to the other side. I do however love that all of the buttons and the microphone jack are covered and are still accessible by flipping up a flap. This will help keep liquid out if you happen to spill. It even has snap off access to the iTunes port. I would have preferred a rubber flap like they have on the iPhone cases as the snap off part is one more piece that can get damaged or lost.
Overall I can confirm that this is a must buy for your iPad. It may be a bit pricey for some at $89.95, but you already spent at least $500 on your iPad so you might as well protect it. The Otterbox defender case will double the weight of your iPad. For me this does not bother me at all as the device is large to begin with. If you are looking for a smaller case you will lose some protection. I personally like smaller cases for my iPhone and other electronics that can easily fit in my pocket, but I am not putting the iPad in my pocket, so I want the maximum protection possible; and the Otterbox Defender Series offers just that. Please note that this case is not waterproof and does not make your iPad indestructible. It will however protect your iPad from the occasional spill or drop though. I will proudly give Otterbox 5 out of 5 stars for an excellent must buy case! You can purchase it directly on Otterbox’s website for $89.95.
