BREAKING: Apple Secretly Logging Your Location

Hey guys, some pretty disturbing news hitting us moments ago. Some researchers in the UK have discovered a very disturbing secret. Your iOS 4 device is logging your location and sending it off when you go and sync it through iTunes.

Now, apparently the location is kept in a fairly easy to access file and the logs are on your computer and when you “restore from backup” the logging continues.

This is huge. Now, this isn’t the typical location logging that happens when apps want to use your location for a specific purpose (like finding nearby restaurants) but this location log is separate and is constantly refreshing the location and storing it, as well as syncing it back to your computer through iTunes (and potentially sending it to Apple).

More info as we get it.

UPDATE:

Here is the tool to view your logs on a map http://petewarden.github.com/iPhoneTracker/

How does the application work?

If you run it on an OS X machine that you’ve been syncing with an iPhone or an iPad with cellular plan, it will scan through the backup files that are automatically made, looking for the hidden file containing your location. If it finds this file, it will then display the location history on the map.
