Usually Apple will push out the latest iOS release with the release of their new iPhones. This year they decided to push it out before they even announced their new iPhones for the year.
This upset many developers who were unprepared. Usually they have a few more days after the announcement to get their apps ready.
iOS 14 brings a ton of new features and Widgets to your screen so you get more information at a quick glance. My favorite is the weather app. You can see a big display of what the weather currently is.
Also new is App Library that organizes your apps in the right category folders automatically for you. My son will not be that happy with this one as he is so particular and has to have his apps organized in a certain way and does not like change.
Compact calls allow uninterrupted viewing when you have an incoming facetime or phone call. You also have the ability to use picture and picture for your FaceTime call.
There are a bunch of improvements to messages with inline replies, mentions, and new memoji styles and stickers.
There is a built in Translate app that allows you to easily translate right on your phone and in Safari.
Siri was also improved so that it does not take up the whole screen anymore.
We also see other improvements to Maps with routing for electric cars, Homekit improvements, CarPlay and CarKey, which lets you use your phone as a key for your car.
