Confirmed: The iPad Doesn’t Need Code Signature On Apps!

Hey guys, today has been very interesting. Like most great discoveries, they happen on accident. We have tested (extensively) and have confirmed that the iPad does not require apps to be code signed!

Brandon and I have been hard at work on some projects here internally at LEI Mobile and during this, we uncovered a rather interesting piece of knowledge. The iPad doesn’t require apps to be code signed in order to run them!

Now, we ruled out “Spirit” as a cause for this, and we ruled pretty much everything else out. No other device does this.

To have a definitive answer, Brandon made a very simple, yet crucial, application for the iPhone OS. It was a simple application that we dubbed “n0S1gn”.

This would be the ultimate test to see if our discovery can be presented as fact.

We simply wrote this simple app, and didn’t sign it. It’s a completely unsigned binary. We didn’t code sign with either Apple’s Developer (official) method, or with LDID (Cydia/Jailbreak app pseudo-signature).

Now, all apps require some kind of code signature to run on the iPhone and iPod touch. This has been the case since iPhone OS 1.1.3. Even Cydia apps need some sort of signature. We use LDID to code sign our Cydia apps and we use Apple’s method to code sign our App Store apps.

So, we took an iPad (Spirit Jailbreak) on 3.2, an iPhone 3G (Pwnage Tool) 3.1.3, an iPhone 3G S (redsn0w) 3.1.3, an iPhone 3G S (Spirit Jailbroken), and an iPod touch 2G (Spirit) and then restored and redsn0w and we uploaded “n0S1gn” to all of those devices, unsigned, and guess what we found? It failed to work on all devices…except… the iPad.

We have determined that the iPad does not require apps to be code signed, at least when they are installed in /Applications.

This may change the community a lot. We may discover some interesting exploits with this discovery :)

More to come…

Apple Urges Users Not To Jailbreak In “Support” Section

Well guys, Apple has finally gone off the deep end. They have actually taken the time to write up an article on reasons on why not to jailbreak. The article was created on April 16th of this year. I stumbled on this article after getting a random tip on Twitter.

Well, Apple gives some very stupid reasons to not jailbreak. They state this in regards to jailbreaking:

Unauthorized modification of iPhone OS has been a major source of instability, disruption of services, and other issues

How To Jailbreak Your iPad With Spirit

  • Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch on the latest firmwares.
  • Spirit is not a carrier unlock.
  • If you currently are using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore to use Spirit. Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS. (You can, however, restore to 3.1.2 if you have SHSH blobs for that version).

To Jailbreak Your iPad With Spirit all you have to do is download Spirt, Extract it, connect your iPad to your computer and click Jailbreak.  Pretty Easy huh?  You can download Spirit here: http://spiritjb.com/

Jailbreak For iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 1 3G iPhones Released

MuscleNerd just announced the release of RedSn0w 0.9.5 Beta that jailbreaks firmware 4.0 Beta 1 for the iPhone 3G. MuscleNerd states that the jailbreak is using same pwnage2 DFU exploit that’s been out for a few years now. Don’t go near it if you use yellowsn0w, ultrasn0w, or blacksn0w for an unlock.  4.0 will lock your iPhone and there is no available lock yet.  Also you will have to be part of a developer team to activate the iPhone as this does not do hacktivation.  We still have a few spots left if you would like to beta test the iPhone OS 4.0.  You can find more info here.

Please also note that this is only for mac as the beta is only intended for developers who have a mac.  You can install 4.0 on a mac and the sync with windows though.

Remember this is for iPhone 3G only (for now).  No luck for iPhone 3G[S] users yet.
