EXCLUSIVE: iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G To Be Locked To AT&T & Verizon
Hey guys, I have some exclusives on some information that was obtained on the iPad 2, particularly on the Wi-Fi + 3G version. Now, it seems that Apple will not be allowing the iPad 2 to roam free. Now, I was curious to see whether the separate iPad 2 (CDMA & GSM) models that were labeled as AT&T or Verizon were just marketing terms or actual facts.
Now, according to Apple, they are in fact locked to AT&T & Verizon respectively. This is a bummer for those who got the first generation iPad. The first generation iPad was unlocked and could be used on AT&T or T-Mobile here in the U.S. but it looks like Apple has struck a deal with AT&T and Verizon to keep it exclusive.
So, relatively low key information, but we are glad that we have confirmation as to whether people will be able to use their iPad 2s on any carrier they wanted, unfortunately, the answer to that question is a resounding “no”.
It seems like we may not see an unlocked iPhone 5 this summer if this trend continues, I wanted Verizon to get the iPhone so that Apple could break their exclusivity with AT&T and get the device unlocked like in Canada, but the opposite happened. Now Verizon & AT&T have exclusivity, but on CDMA and the GSM models.

AT&T Still Sour About Losing Exclusivity; Disses Apple’s App Store
Hey guys, today, AT&T gave their keynote at the Mobile World Congress this morning. They spoke about their plans for the future of AT&T and their plans for 4G as well as the phone industry’s new “app store”, the Wholesale Applications Community. However, it didn’t stop there, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said that Apple’s App Store is “bad for consumers”.
Why would he say this? He claims that consumers expect to only buy an application once and expect it to work on all platforms, not have to purchase the application every time they switch to a new phone.
I beg to differ. First, who expects that? Who honestly expects something that was downloaded and installed on an iOS device to work on an Android OS device, or a BlackBerry OS, or Windows Phone 7 OS, or Symbian? Also, their “app store” would be a place where carriers can sell applications to their customers, thus cutting out Apple, Google, RIM, etc. out of revenue.
This is what has carrier’s steaming mad. Companies like Apple, Google, RIM, and Microsoft who have their own application stores, hubs, marketplaces, (worlds?), and are cutting the carrier’s out of the major revenues. Apple has sold 10 Billion applications and AT&T hasn’t seen a dime.
Not just that, AT&T was fine when they had an exclusive on the planet’s hottest mobile phone, but a few months before Apple and Verizon announced their secret (not so secret?) love, AT&T was already hard at work at distancing themselves from Apple. I think this is extremely low, even for AT&T. After all the success Apple has given AT&T here in the U.S. over these past 3.5 years by having the iPhone locked down and for AT&T to start dissing the device that brought them to beat Verizon? No AT&T, you have it all wrong.
HTML 5 is not a valid platform for mass application distribution and neither is dissing the iPhone (which is still GSM exclusive I may add). People need innovative companies like Apple and Google to compete and make their operating systems and their 3rd party applications better. If we all used the same standard, sure, it would let people use any apps on any phone they get, but it would also slow down innovation.
Everyone doing the same thing isn’t always a good idea AT&T.
Here’s what Randall Stephenson in it’s entirety:
“You purchase an app for one operating system, and if you want it on another device or platform, you have to buy it again. That’s not how our customers expect to experience this environment.”

Hey guys, well as you may know, the Verizon iPhone launched on February 10th to the public (after a series of pre-orders), and we noticed that there were no massive lines for the new iPhone. There are a lot of reasons for this. When news reporters went there, people said it was due to the weather, but I knew that was not the case.
To me, it seemed pretty obvious why Apple and Verizon hadn’t caught as much attention as they wanted. The #1 reason I see is this, it’s still the iPhone 4. There is no difference, except carriers, since iOS 4.3 brings the Personal HotSpot feature. Also, to me, it seems pretty dumb to go buy a phone that is nearly 8 months old when a new one is coming in June.
The #2 reason, AT&T succeeded. AT&T did all it could do to lock people into $365 ETF, 2 year, contracts. They knew this was going to happen and they succeeded in locking down their customers. I haven’t seen such grace in doing so, they dangled a $49 iPhone 3G S in front of people, they gave everyone an early upgrade, and they did such a great job at getting people to go for it. If you know me, it’s rare for me to say nice things about AT&T, but this time, they deserve credit.
However, not this summer, but starting next summer, the Verizon iPhone will become more of a menace to AT&T. In 2013, it’s fair game. I believe AT&T bought itself a year and a half before this becomes a fair fight. Verizon has a long way to go, but I believe that they would be winning if this were a fair fight, but in technology, it rarely is.
Here are some figures that were released today as to the average of how many iPhones are sold every day at each Apple Store in regards to AT&T and Verizon. Trust me, these numbers will shift into Verizon’s favor in a year and a half.
Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539
Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680
Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471
Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701
Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618
More to come…
read moreiPhone Nano: Is It Really Going To Happen Or The Rumor That Just Won’t Die?
Hey guys, well, it has been a couple days since we posted (this is due to several reasons, mostly on stuff that we will be announcing very soon, also, we have been tweaking the new site design with little things that I believe will make it look better than it already does).
Anyways (more on that later), rumors coming out yesterday and today suggest that we will be seeing an iPhone Nano this Summer. Wait, what? Yep. The rumor that just won’t die (like the Apple tablet rumor or the Verizon iPhone rumor which we all know didn’t ever materialize, right?).
So, what are sources saying about this mythical new iOS based device? Well, people familiar with the prototype and Apple plans say that Apple is going to announce and release 2 iPhones this Summer and one of them will be “screen from edge to edge”.
This little part of the information that we received is what grabbed my attention. Previous rumors said that the screen would be smaller, which I would not think would be very Apple-like. Having a full sized 3.5 inch screen with no bezel and relocated speaker would make more sense to me. Also, in iOS 4.3, the new multi-touch gestures would make more sense on this new device seeing as the home button would most likely disappear.
Not only that, rumors from late 2010 suggested that Apple was going to release an iPhone that lacked a home button, so this rumor could be a build up from that, as well as the iPod Nano and that new user interface that didn’t need a home button. Think about it. It all adds up.
Next, sources are saying that the new “iPhone Nano” will lack internal storage in favor of a cloud based ecosystem and network that it would connect to. The reasoning given for this piece of information is that the NAND Flash Memory is the most expensive component of the iPhone and iPad today. Sources are not sure whether an App Store would be possible, but if you look at iOS 4.3 and the possibilities with that on Apple TV and streaming apps, it’s easy to imagine the same thing would work with the iPhone Nano.
Also, they are saying that the iPhone Nano will be a universal iPhone. Both GSM and CDMA, unlocked to any carrier, and would use the Qualcomm chip that is in the Verizon iPhone. Only difference would be that Apple would actually put in a micro-SIM tray into the device so it was truly a “world phone”.
This leads into my final, and most important, piece of information that I want to share, sources are saying that Apple will be making this a $199 iPhone. What’s the difference between this and what we have now? The $199 is unsubsidized, no contract required. So basically, you would purchase this just like any iPod or pre-paid phone at your local electronics store or super market. This is HUGE. If you try to buy an iPhone 4 16GB unsubsidized it adds up to about $649.
So, do I believe that we will be seeing an iPhone Nano? Yes. Why? Android is catching up, and in some cases, even passing iOS in select markets. Apple is in this one to win it. They want something that no one else can compare to, and this just may be the thing that puts Apple back on top. I for one, will be buying this if it’s all true.
