After Years Of Waiting – T-Mobile Now Offers The iPhone

Today, T-Mobile held a press conference called the “Uncarrier” event in New York City and announced that they will offer the iPhone on their network now. You can purchase the iPhone 5 directly from T-Mobile starting April 12th. It will cost just $99 and then you pay $20 monthly for 24 months. You also have the option to purchase it outright at full price. T-Mobile is the only carrier to offer the iPhone with no contract, unlimited data, and a low upfront price. If you compare this to AT&T you will save $1000.

T-Mobile has supported unlocked iPhone’s on their network from the beginning, but has made major improvements to it’s network to offer all of the features. Previously you were limited to 2G data speeds and now you are able to receive 3G/4G data speeds in lots of areas. Not only has T-Mobile been refarming their network to support the iPhone but they have also been expanding it to support 4G LTE.

T-Mobile announced that they are moving very rapidly toward LTE. It will be in 90% of top 25 markets covering 200 million people covered by the end of the year with 100 million covered by midyear. Today, T-Mobile launched its state-of-the-art 4G LTE network in seven major metropolitan areas, including Baltimore; Houston; Kansas City; Las Vegas; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.

Another neat feature that T-Mobile offers for the iPhone 5 is that they will be the only carrier with HD Voice on the iPhone 5 and if you are looking to save even more money, T-Mobile will offer the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S as well.

T-Mobile is the last of the major carriers to get the rights to the iPhone and finally the wait is over. Now we just need them to continue to improve their network!

The Average Gigabytes Used on Mobile Phone Data Packages

These days, mostly everyone uses a smartphone for their mobile phone. Unlike when you own a so-called “dumb” phone, when you have a smartphone, you will find that your wireless carrier will require you to purchase a data plan or upgrade your existing one, depending on how old it is. In particular, the four major wireless carriers — AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless — offer unlimited data plans as part of their packages. More mobile phone users are now transitioning to providers like Clear that provide wireless internet deals with unlimited data plans for on- the- go and home solutions.

While many consumers opt for these data plans, the majority of these individuals never consume more than 2GB of data per month. This is a fairly standard amount as it is the average tier for most smartphone data plans across all of the wireless carriers.

According to a study conducted by research firm NPD Connected Intelligence, the majority of mobile phone users do not need unlimited plans, and in fact, 2GB is more than sufficient to satisfy these individuals. The NPD also collected data from an app on 1,000 Android smartphones to track how much data the owners would consume each month. This is not taking into consideration the usage of iPhone users, but the firm determined that three percent of consumers on Verizon Wireless consume more than 3GB per month, 4 percent of users on Sprint and AT&T consume over 3GB per month and as much as 11 percent of T-Mobile users consume more than 3GB each month. It was also determined that T-Mobile customers tend to be of the younger demographic, which means there is more streaming of music and video to smartphones among this group.

Generally, on the whole, the majority of customers on wireless carriers who have a data plan tied to their mobile phone are not even at the 2GB point. As of the first quarter of 2012, the average data usage for these individuals measured in at approximately 450MB of data per month. It is not surprising that wireless data usage is considerably low due to the fact that all smartphones now come with Wi-Fi capabilities built in. Shared data is also a popular option that is offered by the two top carriers, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, which help consumers to limit their data usage overall.

FAQ: Where is AT&T LTE available?

I have heard the question a few times now. People just got a new iPhone 5 that supports LTE. Unfortunatly AT&T’s LTE locations are very poor right now. Verizon has the best LTE coverage in the US.

LTE stands for Long Term Evolution. It offers speeds up to 10x faster than 3G. It is still a very new technology and most people will use AT&T’s 4G network called HSPA+
Technology that enables 4G speeds up to 4x faster than AT&T’s already fast mobile broadband network.

Currently AT&T has just a few cities with LTE and if you have an LTE iPhone 5, you may want to turn off LTE on your iPhone to preserve your battery.

LTE for AT&T is currently available in these cities:
