iPhone Dev Team Announces Plan To Release Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak, iOS 4.2 Beta 3 IPSW Required
Hey guys, the iPhone Dev Team have finally announced the launch of their untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. Apparently, for now, it will be Mac OS X only and it will require you to have the official 4.2 beta 3 ipsw that official developers (like us and all of those who signed up with us when we were offering spots in our development account should have) as well as the 4.2 beta 3 SHSH.
Also, they are urging people who require ultrasn0w to refrain from using the software, also, they urge people to not pirate the 4.2 beta 3 ipsw software file, they will be working on a way for the same method to work with the 4.1 ipsw.
A restore is not needed for this untethered jailbreak as all you have to do is run redsn0w and it will untether it. The new Mac-Only redsn0w will arrive “over the holiday weekend.
The untether will work with iPhone 3G [S] (new bootrom), iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch G3, iPod touch G4, iPhone 4, and iPad.
Here’s the official press release:
Over the Christmas weekend we’ll be releasing a version of redsn0w that implements the “backup plan” to the 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak. We’re seeking your help to test this redsn0w and find any bugs before we do a general release!
(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak! Just use the latest public redsn0w.)
To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program. We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).
Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes. Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW! (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)
If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section here for feedback. Thanks very much for your help, and Happy Holidays!

Gyroscope Capability In Mobile Safari
Looks like iOS 4.2 brings even more features to the table. If you have an iPhone 4 or an iPod Touch 4G with iOS 4.2 installed you can take advantage of the Gyroscope capability within mobile safari.
Occipital is a company that has developed a panoramic photo iPhone app and a web app that lets you view panoramic photos within mobile safari using the built in Gyroscope. This is very cool and you can check out a demo by visiting: http://occip.it/pt3dmqna

Apple Pulls “Unofficial Wikileaks” Application From App Store
Hey guys, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you would have know that since Wikileaks released confidential diplomatic cables, many companies have given them the cold shoulder.
However, this morning, Apple pulled the “Unofficial Wikileaks” application from the App Store. Now, they didn’t give a reason, but if it were up to me, I would say that it was because they were selling content that is free to the web (and this content is highly seen as a big “no no” by the US Government). The app was selling for $1.99 but the developer claims to have been donating $1.00 of it to Wikileaks, factor in Apple’s 30% cut, and you’re left with about $0.40 for the developer.
Not too bad (if they were doing as they said). Apple has not yet commented on the pulling of the application, but we’ll have more info as we get it.
Here’s what the developer had to say:
Basically the paid app was selling WikiLeaks content (available for free) for $1.99. Its entry into the app store on December 17th was actually surprising, as Apple is usually quite strict and somewhat vague about its app approval standards. WikiLeaks and founder Julian Assange are quite controversial, to put it lightly but I’m not sure if the app directly violated anything in Apple’s TOS.
In the past couple of weeks corporate biggies Amazon, PayPal, Mastercard, Visa and Bank of America have all tried to disassociate themselves in one way or another from WikiLeaks. If this isn’t some kind of glitch, Apple has plenty company.
